  14. Although this program is free, I make one restriction: Every user has to send
  15. me a NETMAIL (2:245/31.5) ! This is only for me to have an idea of the
  16. distribution and acceptance of my program ... :-)

  19. Introduction:
  20. =============

  22. NewScan is a program that was only written for Points/SysOps who work with
  23. FrontDoor(TM). It will NOT WORK with any other E-Mail-System ! Further a RA/
  24. QBBS-compatible message-base is required !
  25. Machine requirements: MSDOS >=3.0 and 256kB free ram

  28. Description:
  29. ============

  31. NewScan is a program that should be executed right after the import of incoming
  32. mail (after all mail is tossed). It searches all FroDo-folders (Netmail, Echo-
  33. mail etc.) for new messages to a certain user and writes short notes about them
  34. (Area, Message-Nr., Sender and Subject).
  35.  
  36. This can be organised in two different ways:
  37.  
  38. a) showing the data on the monitor (call: NEWSCAN S)
  39. b) writing a netmail to the user   (call: NEWSCAN N)
  40.  
  41. The first way is quite useful if you want to see whether there are any new
  42. messages addressed to you. In this case an F-key should be defined for
  43. easy execution.
  44.  
  45. The second way is for automatic systems. The program-call should be placed
  46. in the batch-file that imports the incoming mail (e.g. after QEcho/TosScan
  47. AND after any utility that changes the msg-numbers like MBUTIL).
  48. The second way has this advantage (esp. for SysOps): everytime NewScan
  49. is run (e.g. when new mail came from your points) it first of all deletes
  50. all old netmails it has written and then writes a new one with ALL the
  51. messages found (no data is lost). Thus the netmail written by NewScan always
  52. reflects the current situation and there are not many netmails with different
  53. information (else you might easily be confused by different NewScan netmails)..

  56. Advanced Features
  57. =================
  58.  
  59. Netmail-Renumber
  60. ----------------
  61. Now NewScan can renumber your netmails ! This happens if you call NewScan by
  62. NEWSCAN P or NEWSCAN ? -P (where ? is S or N). Then NewScan will renumber all
  63. the netmail-messages and - of course - will update the reply chaines.
  64. If you call NewScan by NEWSCAN N -P, it will insert its own netmail right
  65. before the new netmails so that it will be read first. By using this feature
  66. you will get informed direct at the start of your work with editor !

  68. Echomail-forwarding
  69. -------------------
  70. By using the "-F"-switch all new echomail-messages addressed to you will be
  71. exported in the netmail-folder - so you can easily read the new mails without
  72. going into the folders. Also, with "-FR" these messages will be marked as
  73. "received", so they won't be found in the next NewScan-session even if you
  74. have not read them in the echomail-folders yet.

  76. Relative-messagenumbers
  77. -----------------------
  78. The switch "-R" will turn on the relative messagenumbers instead of the
  79. absolute. This is a feature for those guys who use an message-editor supporting
  80. the relative numbers (e.g. GoldEd).

  82. Wait-for-Key-Switch
  83. -------------------
  84. If you call NEWSCAN S -W the computer will wait at the end of the programme for
  85. you to strike any key.

  88. How to install:
  89. ===============

  91. NEWSCAN.EXE should be copied to the FrontDoor(TM)-directory (e.g. C:\FRODO).
  92. As NewScan reads all the data it need from the FD.SYS file, no further changes
  93. have to be made. Make sure that the "FD"-environment-variable is defined (as
  94. descripted in the FrontDoor(TM) manual).

  97. Warranty:

  100. As many other authors I cannot give any warranty that my program works properly
  101. and without causing any complications, errors or damage !!!
  102. Complications may be very rare but they are possible !
  103. Remember: the program has been tested by several people in several ways to see
  104. how it works !

  129. ... but I have some ideas for the future versions of my programme:

  131. * NewScan as a Door-Programme in a BBS (e.g. in RemoteAccess to replace the
  132.   built-in mailcheck)
  133. * further maintenance of the netmail-base (sorting, reply linking)
  134. * searching for messages to many users (multi-user)
  135. * and a few other things to make life easier... :-)
